A good night’s sleep
Babies are a source of constant joy and endless memories to cherish later, but they also require a great deal of energy and attention. Having an all-new tiny human who is only just experiencing everything for the first time is a massive responsibility, and is almost guaranteed to leave parents exhausted.
When our little ones’ batteries finally go flat and they go to sleep, parents can finally get a bit of R&R – provided they can rest easy knowing their baby is sleeping soundly in a safe and comfortable crib. As is the case with any other piece of furniture or equipment related to babies and toddlers, safety is the number one concern.
Newborns require 14 to 17 hours of sleep a day, while babies who are four month old “only” sleep 10 to 12. As they grow, they require less and less sleep, but children can still spend a lot of time in their cribs, especially before they learn essentials like standing on their own or walking. Due to this, the crib plays an important part in their development.
It’s important to pay attention to the mattress, what material it’s made of, how dense and rigid it is and how comfortable your baby finds it. While everyone has different preferences, it’s important for the mattress not to be too soft. Some mattresses use materials that are allergens, which is another important thing to filter out. The basic thing to look out for, however, is whether a mattress is included at all, since in some cases you need to buy them separately.
When buying things for babies, you have to factor in the fact that a lot will need to be replaced very often, due to how quickly they grow up. Precisely due to this, you should look at models that have longevity whenever you can, to benefit both your budget and the environment. Many cribs are adjustable and transformable, making them ideal for multiple stages in your baby’s development, not just one, forcing you to sell or donate it soon after buying it. Some even convert into a non-crib bed!
The material of the crib itself is also key. You need to be sure its strong enough not to be break – or be broken – in order to be sure that your baby is in absolute safety when inside. The walls need to be tall enough to ensure no adventurous youngling tumbles over the side or climbs out somehow.
Dimensions and measurements are key altogether. You need to ensure the crib will fit the room you intend to keep it in, while also being large enough to accommodate your child as they grow. Paying attention to the weight limit is also important – the higher the limit, the longer you can use the same crib.
Another factor to keep an eye out for is ease of assembly, and whether all the necessary hardware for it is included in the package. Nobody wants a surprise extra trip to the hardware store after unpacking the crib’s components. Some baby cribs are collapsible and don’t even require assembly, making them suitable for travel or storage.
There are several toxicity certification standards that are recognized internationally and it’s important to buy a crib that has been certified as non-toxic. Materials such as lead can do all kinds of harm to a developing body, so you need to be sure the bed your baby is sleeping in isn’t a health risk.
Thanks to newer designs, there is a wide variety of form factors available. Alongside typical cribs, a newer bedside sleeper style has been gaining popularity. This type of crib only has 3 sides with one left open, and its height is freely adjustable. The concept is to push it right up next to the bed of the parents and have the mattress be at the same elevation as the large bed’s mattress, making the crib work as a kind of extension or add-on. This allows you to be close to your little one when you manage to synchronize your sleeping schedules, without there being any risk of accidentally rolling onto them.
We’ve collected the best cribs currently available across multiple price points, with various designs represented in our list. Refer to our buying guide to make the tough decision of picking the best crib that much easier.

Dream On Me Aden Convertible Crib
The Dream On Me Aden Convertible Crib is a stylish example of a well-made baby crib. This convertible wooden model promises longevity and versatility, which are the kinds of features we typically look for. When assembled, the dimensions of this crib are 39 inches long by 28 inches wide by 37 inches tall. The crib on its own weighs 40 lbs.
The main advantage of the Dream On Me Aden Convertible Crib is that it can be converted into other form factors, making it a long-lasting piece of furniture your child can enjoy for years. The mattress can be placed in one of three positions, allowing you to move it lower and lower as your child grows.
Additionally, the crib can transform into either a day bed or a twin size bed, once your little one isn’t so little as to require rails on all sides. This means that you won’t need to switch to a different bed altogether for a very long time, saving you money and sparing the environment of unnecessary waste.
The all-wood construction of the Dream On Me Aden Convertible Crib ensures that it looks stylish while being safe and natural. The pine finish doesn’t only look fantastic but has been certified non-toxic and lead-free by the CPSC and ASTM standards. Sleeping in this crib won’t lead to any harmful side effects. While the wood finish looks great, it also requires more caution since it can chip and scratch more easily.
While you can purchase the crib on its own if you want, it’s also available with the mattress included. The Dream On Me mattress to be used with the Aden has a waterproof, hypoallergic vinyl cover making it comfortable and easy to clean in case of inevitable accidents.
The lightweight mattress resists stains and odors and has the same anti-toxicity certifications as the crib itself, with additional flammability standard certifications. The thickness of the mattress itself is 3 inches and is suitably dense for ideal support.
The maximum weight this model can bear is 50 lbs, which is where the lightweight mattress comes in – it doesn’t detract too much from how much the added weight of your child can be. The crib is sturdy and easy to assemble, with everything required to set it up included in the package.
Why It’s Our #1 Choice
The Dream On Me Aden Convertible Crib combines everything we look for in a baby crib. This convertible, long-lasting solution will accompany your child’s dreams for many a year and looks great while being safe and sturdy. It packs all the certifications required and is easy to assemble to boot. We really don’t see much reason to pick any other crib.
A fantastic solution which can be relied on for years, the Dream On Me Aden Convertible Crib is a great multi-functional bed for which will ensure your little one sleeps soundly in safety. We’d be able to rest easy knowing our baby is sleeping in one of these.

Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib
The Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib is a very different kind of crib than the Aden, serving a different purpose and sporting different features. Designed with mobility in mind, this collapsible crib is lightweight at just 13 lbs, and measures 42 inches long, 32 inches wide and 25 inches tall when opened. Unlike some other cribs, this isn’t convertible but is instead already large enough by default to be suitable for children of varying ages.
The obvious advantage of the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib over other cribs is that it can be collapsed into a much smaller pack without any disassembly. The crib folds in onto itself in a few easy steps, closing up into a luggage sized box complete with straps, allowing it to be carried or worn like a backpack.
The dimensions of the collapsed crib are just 24 inches in length, 7 inches in width and 11 inches in height. If you’re looking for a crib that you can take with you when you travel, this is an ideal choice.
To facilitate the collapsible function, this crib doesn’t have multiple mattress positions. Instead, the mattress lies on the bottom of the crib which is right on the ground. This means a lot of leaning, however the Lotus has a unique solution. The see-through mesh sides can be unzipped to allow access to the parent from the floor. This way you can open up the side and nurse or comfort your little one while lying down, then close the side access back up once you are done.
The Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib comes with a mattress designed specifically to be used with the crib itself. Both the crib and the mattress have the non-toxicity, flammability and chemical certifications you need to be sure that it’s absolutely safe, featuring a Greenguard Gold rating.
Being geared towards travel, the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib is made of sturdy materials and a design that favors function over form, while still looking modern. The focus on mobility makes it a great choice if you’re on the go, but certain concessions had to be made to facilitate this.
While the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib is ultimately a fantastic crib and sports most of the features we outlined in our criteria, by design its strengths can also be drawbacks in some contexts. We definitely recommend the Lotus, but not as your primary crib – it’s best used as a backup and specifically for travel, alongside a traditional crib.

Baby Delight Beside Me Dreamer Bassinet & Bedside Sleeper
And now, once more, for something completely different. The Baby Delight Beside Me Dreamer Bassinet & Bedside Sleeper is yet another type of baby bed that, though only suitable for younger children, fulfills a different purpose and allows you to stay close to your little ones when sleeping, without any risk of accidentally rolling on them.
The assembled bassinet measures 37 inches by 22.5 inches by 30.75 inches and weighs 25 and a half pounds.
Being a bedside sleeper, the Baby Delight Beside Me Dreamer can be attached to your own bed, acting as a sort of extension, giving you the comfort, and your little one the sense of security, of being close when you sleep, without any risk to the baby of falling off the bed or being crushed under a parent who may roll around. This proximity can help you comfort your baby the quickest and nurse in comfort.
To facilitate this, the bed has six height positions, ensuring that it is compatible with all common bed types. One side of the four is detachable, and the opening is meant to face your bed, to which the crib is fastened with straps for added security.
The side of the crib which folds away to enable bedside sleeping can be locked back into place in case you want to use it as a standalone bassinet. The bassinet is attached to an internal rail system allowing you to gently rock it back and forth to soothe your baby even when the bedside sleeper is attached to a bed.
Included in the package are a fiber-filled mattress and a waterproof sheet, allowing for maximum comfort as well as ease of cleaning. The whole bassinet is very lightweight, making moving it between rooms very easy. Assembling it requires no tools and is a simple process.
While the comfort of knowing your baby is right next to you can be soothing, it’s important to note that the Baby Delight Beside Me Dreamer Bassinet & Bedside Sleeper will be outgrown by your little one very quickly. It’s rather small and the weight capacity is fairly low as well.
We like the concept of bedside sleepers, however the way the Baby Delight Beside Me Dreamer Bassinet & Bedside Sleeper tackles it isn’t the best. We’d be a lot more enthusiastic about this bassinet if it could be converted in additional ways and be used by larger children as well.
- SAFE and COMFORT- Sleep soundly knowing that your baby is safer and comfortable
- MOBILE- It is lightweight enough to move from room to room for convenience.
- ADJUSTABLE- 6-positions allow height adjustment to adapt the sleeper height to most adult beds.
- ACCESS- Easily lean over to nurse, comfort or just check on your baby during the night
- QUICK TOOL-FREE ASSEMBLY; Storage pocket
Delta Children Folding Portable Mini Baby Crib
The Delta Children Folding Portable Mini Baby Crib brings us back to the standard, traditional crib form factor, with an adjustable mattress and wooden frame. The whole crib measures 39 inches by 25 inches by 37.25 inches and can fold in on itself. The weight capacity of this model is 35 pounds.
A set of caster wheels on all four legs of the crib grant the Delta Children Folding Portable Mini Baby Crib a great deal of mobility, allowing you to easily roll it around the house, from room to room, without having to lift or disassemble the crib. It also allows you to easily rock the crib to soothe your little one when they’re upset – just make sure the crib isn’t on an incline, or it will start rolling around on its own!
The Delta Children Folding Portable Mini Baby Crib is made out of wood in order to be more homey than a rigid plastic construction could be. Using wood also means that the crib is made of natural materials, and this helps it pass JPMA certification to prove its non-toxic. The mattress that comes with the package has the same certification.
You can move the mattress between two positions, one higher for when the baby is small, making it easier to access, and one lower for when your little one stops being so little. This will let you use this crib for a longer time than is the case with fixed bottom cribs, though we’d prefer more positions.
The Delta Children Folding Portable Mini Baby Crib can fold up into a flat shape, in a way that allows the wheels to still fulfill their function. This is ideal for storage purposes, though the manufacturer bills this feature as making the crib ideal for travel. That said, if you want to travel, we’d sooner suggest the Lotus we reviewed earlier.
The Delta Children Folding Portable Mini Baby Crib doesn’t do anything wrong per se, but it also doesn’t excel in anything. Our #1 pick and the Lotus both fulfill its features with greater efficiency. Ultimately, we can recommend this model, but would still rate others above it.

BABYBJORN Travel Crib Easy Go
The BABYBJORN Travel Crib Easy Go is up against the previously reviewed Lotus to grab the travel crib market. This travel crib is 19.3 inches by 23.6 inches by 5.5 inches when open, and since the mattress sits on the floor there isn’t any weight limit for its use. Naturally however, there is a point when your child will outgrow it. The whole crib weighs just 13 pounds.
The main attraction here is the ability to fold it up into a neat, small carrying case that will make taking the crib along when you travel that much easier. The process of folding it up is simple, can be done quickly, and once folded it can fit into an included carrying bag with two convenient handles. The easily removable and washable fabric means that the inevitable dirt of travel won’t be a problem.
Aside of being collapsible, this model doesn’t pack a lot of features. The materials are certified non-toxic by the Oeko-Tex Standard and there is an included mattress to be used which sports the same certifications. The crib consists of a strong frame with a large mesh pulled over it.
The breathable, see-through mesh ensures that your baby does not feel isolated when inside the crib, though it is missing the unzippable side-access. Compared to its somewhat limited feature set though, the price is quite high – which we don’t see the reason for to be honest.
The BABYBJORN Travel Crib Easy Go does most of the same things as the Lotus travel crib, but not as well, and misses some key features of its competitor. Add to that its high price, and you’ve got something that is the lesser choice in our opinion.
- Small travel crib for a baby or toddler
- Easy to set up in just one move
- Removable and washable fabrics
- Convenient to take with you on long or short trips
- Airy design for good supervision
Cribs fulfill an essential role in the lives of our children. In their youngest years, sleep is absolutely essential for their development, and it’s important that we provide the best environment for it. Whether we’re at home or on the go, your child needs the best sleeping solution that is tailored to their current size and stage of development.
Different people have different preferences and the crib market seeks to provide for ever niche, be it with traditional cribs, bedside sleepers or collapsible travel cribs. When purchasing for your baby, you need to pay attention to the long term as well – ensuring that the crib is non-toxic can prevent any future medical issues, and picking a model that can be used for a long period of time will help the environment they will inherit from us.
